The sport of sailing was first introduced into Myanmar back in 1924 when a group of sailing enthusiasts formed a club which was then known as the Rangoon Sailing Club, now called the Yangon Sailing Club, on the western shores of the magnificent Inya Lake, not far from the heart of Yangon City itself. Then in 1956, the national authority Burma Yachting Federation (BYF), known today as the Myanmar Yachting Federation (MYF) was established. During that time, BYF was the first of its kind in the entire South East Asian Peninsula (SEAP) Region, now known as the SEA Region. It was then headed by U Maung Maung Lwin, who was not only a keen sailor himself, but was also an active and dynamic member of the National Olympic Committee. Under his leadership, Myanmar sailors even ventured out to participate in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and in the 1960 Rome Olympics Yachting Events.

In 1961 as a milestone achievement, Yachting was included for the first time in the 2nd SEAP Games which was held in Myanmar as the host country. However, Yachting .......

When I was young I had the opportunity to live in one of the national bank villas by the lakeside, and it was simply a very lovely scene to see colorful yachts sailing in the scenic Inya Lake, especially in the evenings while the sun is setting.During public holidays and on weekends,we would often go for a swim in the middle of the lake, with our own little row boat, from where I would have a closer look at the yachts and wondered how they use the sail to steer the boat in all directions although the wind was from only one direction...I also could not understand when the boats would go zigzag in approaching the buoy near our place. Sometimes they would shout at us to keep clear or stay away as they obviously did not want us to interfere with their racing....

In sailing there always is the factor of luck. Any sailor will tell you that. I feel I have been a very lucky sailor indeed. I have been fortunate enough to have been an active sailing member of the Yangon Sailing Club for over twelve years. My luck started when I met some one back in 1989 who told me about the club. I was in Myanmar to start building the first Yacht for my company. Paul Broadbent, a sailing member had invited me to go sailing. I decided to go and check out the club before hand. What I found was a small, but well established Sailing Club. It was a in beautiful and peaceful setting and the Club House and Bar had one of those boat club atmospheres that made me feel right at home....

I had taken up sailing, rather late in the day regrettably, primarily attracted by the social and leisure opportunities it had to offer, quite apart from its competitive aspects.

However, once I could handle the rudiments of sailing, I was totally hooked and before long found myself whole-heartedly engrossed with the Yangon Sailing Club’s ( YSC ) week-end races and monthly challenges, ....

I remember the times when our family used to go to the Inya Lake for a swim on weekends. Although we had a lot of fun in the water, we couldn't help but notice the beautiful sailboats far out in the lake. They looked like they were dancing silently to the gazed wonderingly at the boats for a long time, and every time ...
