Eight years of dedication
to reviving sailing in the former Burma bore fruit
in three gold medals at the S.E.A. Games last September:In
1993 U "Michael" Moe Myint set out to
re-established the sport of sailing, which had vitually
ceased to exist following national independence,
with a small group of 8- and 9-year olds.... With
advise and help from Singapore and Thailand a fleet
of Optimists was established and local coaches trained,
helped by IODA grants. A year later they started
to send teams to our Asians, Worlds and even on
one occasion to our Europeans to gain experiance,
progessing from 118the in 1994 to 33rd three years
later:In 2001 these same sailors came of age at
the huge multi-sport SEA (South East Asian) Games
in Malaysia, taking gold in the 420 men, 420 women
and Laser II classes ahead of their one-time mentors
Singapore and Malaysia. And just to show that Optimist
sailing continues to flourish they took bronze in
that event too.
